LC Women's Basketball Comes Up Short at Washington & Lee

LEXINGTON, VA – Using a late rally in the second half, the Washington & Lee University women's basketball team defeated Lynchburg College 65-57 on Friday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. The game was the final regular season match for the Hornets before a possible berth in the ODAC Tournament next week in Salem, Va.

Lynchburg had four players score in double-figures in the game, including a 16-point outing from senior Carly Greenlief. Fellow senior Katie Crump added 13 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Shannon Allan tallied 11 points and senior Caitlin Falls registered 10 points. Falls also snagged seven boards while Allan finished the game with three steals and eight rebounds.

Washington & Lee held the Hornets at bay for much of the first half, despite Lynchburg shooting 50% from the floor in the frame. With 3:21 left in the half and W&L leading 22-17, Crump nailed a jumper which was followed up by another jumper from Greenlief just 24 seconds later to bring the Hornets within one.

Then with the Generals maintaining a 24-22 lead headed into halftime, Allan completed a jumper with two seconds on the clock to knot the score at 24-24 leading to the break.

Coming out of halftime, both teams remained tight though LC took a five-point lead at the 15:55 mark after a made free throw from Crump. Washington & Lee however, took advantage of three-pointers in the second half, making 6-7 to help take over the lead, and eventually top Lynchburg by a final of 65-57.

Kari Pfannenstein and Meg Ingram each registered four three-point buckets in the game for W&L (12-12/10-9 ODAC). Becca Bolton led the Generals with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Lynchburg finishes the regular season with a 9-16 record including an 8-12 mark in conference. The Hornets are currently in the seventh spot in the ODAC, with the top eight heading to Salem, VA for the ODAC Tournament starting next Thursday. Further details on the tournament will be announced in the coming days following the completion of games this weekend.
