Hornet Men Hold on for 68-67 Win at W&L

LEXINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team took a large lead and held on Saturday afternoon to defeat Washington & Lee University 68-67 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.

Lynchburg dominated the early going, and held a 20-point advantage with six minutes left in the first half. LC entered halftime ahead 41-25.

The Hornets still claimed a 62-51 advantage with 5:57 on the game clock before the Generals rallied and cut into the deficit. Following an 15-3 W&L surge, junior guard Xavier Parham made two free throws with 1:27 on the game clock to give LC a three-point edge, but W&L's Javon McDonald drove to the hoop for a contested lay-up with 1:03 remaining. Following a pair of Hornet misses, W&L had a chance to take the lead in the final 10 seconds trailing by just one point, but missed a deep three-pointer and LC senior forward Mike Glover snared the rebound and the Hornets were able to run out the clock.

Glover paced a balance LC scoring attack with a team-high 10 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Senior big men Austin Chillemi and Michael Wims each had nine points and eight rebounds, while senior Brandan Connor had nine points and seven caroms. Parham was the fourth Hornet to score nine points and also added five rebounds and five assists. A 59 percent free-throw shooter entering the game, he buried 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, including several key attempts. Junior Manny Hernandez had eight points and five rebounds and freshman Austen Arnold finished with seven points.

McDonald posted a game-high 25 points for the Generals (6-6/1-2 ODAC), nailing six three pointers. Larry Whitaker had eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds and J.D. Ey posted seven points and seven rebounds. Lynchburg held a 51-42 edge in rebounding.

The Hornets host Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in more ODAC action.
