Hornets Defeat Maroons 1-0 in Quarterfinals of ODAC Tournament
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team only needed one goal to defeat the Roanoke College Maroons 1-0 on Saturday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament play.
LC took advantage early in the game after junior Luke Moore received the ball from senior Michael Venegas and chipped it over the defender into the back of the net at 15:21 in the first half. The Hornet defense put forward a strong effort for the rest of the period, and went into halftime with the 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg came knocking early in the second when sophomore Earl Rimbey fired a shot from 15 yards out, only to be kicked out of the way at the last second by Carl Leist of the Maroons. Roanoke had some key opportunities to score late in the game, but the LC defense came through and the Hornets held on to win 1-0.
Senior Jonathan Sheffield played all 90 minutes and shut down the Maroon offense, saving six balls. Cole Sinclair recorded four saves for the Maroons (9-7-2). Roanoke had a slight 16-12 advantage in shots, while Lynchburg lead in corner kicks 3-2.
The Hornet men (11-5-2) will travel to face Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday, November 6 for the ODAC semifinals. The time for the game is to be announced.
