HSC Defeats LC Men's Lax 12-8

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Hampden-Sydney College men's lacrosse team scored an upset Saturday, upending 10th-ranked Lynchburg College 12-8 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.

The Tigers started the contest strong, taking a 5-1 lead after one period with tallies from five different goal scorers. Vin Curran scored to open the second for LC, but HSC's Ryan Martin posted back-to-back goals to extend the advantage to 7-2. Goals from Curran, Berk Ellis and Campbell Armstrong brought LC back to within two with 5:49 remaining in the period. The Tigers closed out the half with a three-goal spurt of their own, two from Thomas Armstrong, to enter intermission ahead 10-5.

After 15 first-half tallies, the second half featured just five goals as Hampden-Sydney slowed down the pace and controlled the ball. The team's traded goals early in the third period, and Max Voumard found the back of the net with five minutes left in the stanza to cut the lead to 11-7. Austin Stewart cut the lead to three just 34 seconds into the final period, but it was the last goal the HSC defense would allow.

Voumard and Curran had two goals for LC and Campbell Armstrong and Todd Galvin each had a goal and an assist. Curran won 11 of his 19 face-off opportunities and scooped four ground balls.

Thomas Armstrong had three goals and an assist for Hampden-Sydney (11-4/6-2). Martin and James Hughes also scored three times and Mike Funk and Corey Mavromatis had two assists each. Brad Mastowy won eight of his 14 face-off attempts and had a game-high 10 ground balls. David Noftsinger made 11 saves.

Lynchburg honored the program's eight seniors in a pre-game ceremony.

The Hornets travel to Shenandoah University next Saturday for another ODAC clash at 1 p.m.
