Burnett's Big Game Blasts Hornets Past Bridgewater, 84-78
BRIDGEWATER, VA—The Lynchburg College men's basketball team stepped up the defensive effort in the second half, outscoring Bridgewater College by six to win 84-78 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference Saturday.
Bridgewater scored the first two points in the second half to go up 46-44, but the Hornets answered with six straight. Zack Burnett connected on three free throws before Manny Hernandez knocked down a three-pointer on LC's next possession for a 50-46 lead. It was only the second lead of the game for the Hornets.
The Eagles tied it up on a pair of free throws by Ed Reddick and a Daniel McClain layup before Lyndon White netted a free throw for the Hornets to go back up 51-50. Following a BC missed jumper, Burnett got the ball in transition and knocked down another three for a 54-50 lead with 16:28 left.
The LC defense kept the Eagles at bay the remainder of the game, holding the home team to nine made field goals, good for a 31% shooting percentage, including 16.7% (1-for-6) from behind the arc. By comparison, Lynchburg shot 71.4% (5-for-7) from three in the second half.
After setting a career-high in scoring Wednesday at Randolph College, Burnett set it again with 25 points. He added six assists and four rebounds while Alex Graves contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds in a homecoming of sorts being from nearby Waynesboro, VA. Hernandez finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
Reddick led all scorers with 29 points and 11 rebounds for Bridgewater (9-7/4-4). Tavis Stapleton and Kyle Welty had 12 points each.
Lynchburg (13-4/6-2) will look to continue its four-game winning streak when Emory & Henry College (2-15/0-8) visits the Hill City Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip.
