Grossfuss Scores, Defense Holds On As Lynchburg Wins Fifth in a Row
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team hosted Virginia Wesleyan College Wednesday night and came out with a 1-0 victory over the defending champs of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
The Hornets got the lone goal of the game early with a strike from Ben Grossfuss inside the box. Fredy Flores made a great effort to keep the ball inbounds along the goal line and crossed it in low to Grossfuss for the assist. Grossfuss has now scored three goals in the past four games.
Confident, aggressive play by the Hornets throughout the match kept the Marlins' defense on its toes. LC had a total of 11 shots which was matched by their counterparts.
Things got a little on-edge late as the Marlins (7-4-2, 4-2-1) attempted to come back. Three yellow cards were issued along with eight fouls by both teams.
Scott Zaring had one save in goal as the Hornets defense posted their fifth shutout of the season. Lynchburg's defense has played stout as of late and has not allowed a goal in their last four games.
The Hornets (9-4, 6-1), who currently sit in second place in the ODAC standings, will be back in action this weekend at home in a conference matchup versus Emory and Henry College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
