Men's Soccer Advances to ODAC Semis for Second Straight Year
LYNCHBURG, VA – The No. 2-seeded Lynchburg College men's soccer team advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinals for the second time in as many years Saturday with a 3-0 victory over No. 7-seeded Randolph College.
The game went back and forth early and both defenses played well to keep the ball in the midfield, resulting in a scoreless match at halftime.
Lynchburg broke through at 50:49 when Thomas Salamone took a throw-in from the near side of the field. Josh Hinkle headed the ball off the near post right to Earl Rimbey who found the back of the net.
The Hornets scored another goal when Rimbey took a shot off a corner kick. C.J. Stevens made the save for Randolph, but Hinkle was in the right place for the rebound.
Lynchburg finished the scoring at 78:34 when a WildCat foul resulted in a free kick. Tim Clancy took the kick from near midfield and found Ben Grossfuss past the defense for the third and final tally of the match.
Corey Budka made three saves in net for the Hornets (12-6) while Stevens finished with four stops for Randolph (7-7-4). Lynchburg maintained a 21-10 advantage in shots and 9-5 lead in corner kicks.
With the win, the Hornets will face No. 3 seed Virginia Wesleyan College Tuesday night in the ODAC semifinals. It is the third-straight year the Hornets have faced the Marlins in the ODAC tournament, with the first two resulting in losses.
