LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team opened an early 29-5 lead Sunday afternoon and never looked back en route to a 90-66 victory over visiting Christopher Newport University in non-conference play. CNU was ranked #24 in Division III this week.
The Hornets started the contest on fire and the Captains could seemingly do no right as LC took a 29-5 lead 10 minutes into play. Juniors Austen Arnold and Alex Graves led the charge, combining for 19 points in the surge. The Captains could get no closer than 17 in the first half, and Lynchburg held a 48-28 lead at halftime. LC shot 55 percent (16-29) in the first 20 minutes, while CNU hit just 23.5 percent (8-34).
LC scored the first two baskets of the second half to extend the advantage to 24 before the visitors started chipping away. A 24-10 run got CNU back in the game, down just 10 (62-52) with nine minutes on the game clock. But Lynchburg used an 11-2 surge to effectively put the game out of reach, eight of the points coming from the free-throw line.
