Hornets Fall to the Captains 71-56
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport University 71-56 in a non-conference matchup on Sunday.
LC kept the game close through the first five minutes, keeping the score tied at six all. CNU scored the next couple of points, but the Hornets stayed tight, cutting the Captains lead to 14-13 with 10:41 left on the clock after a jumper by Shannon Allan. CNU responded with a 10-0 run to take a 24-13 advantage. Both teams would go back and forth, and then Christopher Newport extended the lead further, with Lynchburg heading into the intermission down 45-27.
The half did not start well for Lynchburg, as CNU pushed its lead to a high of 21 with 17:49 on the clock, but the Hornets went on a run after that. LC attacked the zone defense employed by the Captains, and Lauren Penley made an open layup off the Sarah Coon assist to put the score at 50-31. It started a run of nine straight, and 11 of 12 points scored by Lynchburg, with Allan tallying seven of them.
The run would put the Hornets within 11 points of the Captains but that would be as close as it would get. Each team traded baskets until the final two minutes of the game, when LC began to foul CNU to stop the clock. Christopher Newport made its free throws to seal the victory.
Sam Porter led the Captains (4-2 overall) with 18 points in the game, 10 of them coming from the charity stripe, while Camry Green added a double-double (11-10) in the victory. Allan notched a game-high 20 points, while Sammi Goldsmith and Chaney Forbush each posted double figures in the loss. Forbush collected a game-high 14 rebounds, to earn her second double-double of the year.
Lynchburg (3-2) opens up its Old Dominion Athletic Conference schedule this Wednesday night. The Hornets head to rival Roanoke College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
