Tough Roll Lifts Quakers Past Lynchburg, 68-66

LYNCHBURG, VA – Freshman Trever Hyatt hit a game-winning three pointer with 11 seconds left to lift the Guilford College men's basketball team past Lynchburg College 68-66 Wednesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The three was one of Hyatt's six on the evening, resulting in a game-high 24 points to go with four boards and two steals.

Lynchburg had a chance as time expired when Manny Hernandez took a 25-foot three from the right wing, but the ball bounced off the back of the iron, tipped the front rim twice, and rolled out.

Despite the late heroics by the Quakers, Lynchburg maintained a lead throughout most of the game. LC utilized defensive pressure to turn Guilford's largest lead of four, 6-2, into a six-all tie on a Gary Boone II jumper and pair of Austen Arnold free throws.

An Arnold trifecta and fast break layup by Lyndon White following a steal capped the Hornet run at 9-0, resulting in an 11-6 lead.

The steal was one of six that White had in the game, a season high for the Hornets.

Lynchburg continued to pull away, leading by 14 with five minutes to play in the first, but Guilford responded with a 13-0 run to cut the lead to one, 36-35, with 1:24 to go in the period. The LC defense stepped up again, allowing the Hornets to score the final four points of the half.

Lynchburg continued to double the Quaker big men in the second half, an attempt to make up for the size advantage that Guilford possessed. The Quakers moved the ball around successfully to break the pressure and find an open space for their guards, such as Hyatt, to shoot from.

The Hornets managed to fight off the Quaker shooting for the majority of the second half, leading 58-49 with 8:24 remaining. The Quakers held Lynchburg to two field goals, both from distance, to end on a 19-8 run.

Lynchburg was led by Arnold's 17 points to go with eight rebounds and two steals. Hernandez contributed 15 points to go along with White's nine points, five boards, five assists, and the previously mentioned six steals.

Jake Hopkins joined Hyatt in double figures with 14 points for Guilford (17-7/11-4) with eight boards. Matt McCarthy added 12 points and five assists.

Despite tonight's loss, the Hornets will enter the ODAC tournament next Friday as the four seed and receive a bye in the first round.

Lynchburg (17-7/10-5) hosts Bridgewater College (12-11/7-8) Saturday at 3 p.m. for Senior Day in the regular-season ODAC finale.
