Lynchburg Women Ride Strong Second Half to 69-61 Victory
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team outscored Guilford College by 13 points in the second half to capture a 69-61 victory Wednesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
The Hornets trailed 45-34 after Gabby Oglesby converted on an old-fashioned three-point play for Guilford with 14:02 left in the game.
Charmaine Hairston hit a jumper on the Hornets' next possession and following a Quaker miss, Shannon Allan connected on a three to get the game within six, 45-39.
The Hornet defense forced another contested Guilford shot and Hairston boarded it, raced up the floor, and found Allan for another jump shot to cap the 7-0 run.
The teams swapped baskets on the next two possessions but LC was always able to keep the game within six. Trailing 51-45 with 10:01 remaining, the Hornets made their final run.
A layup by Chaney Forbush and a pair of free throws by Hairston brought the Hornets within one possession, 51-49. Lauren Penley stole the ball away from Guilford and Ann Dorris connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key to give LC its first lead since 3-2.
Another Forbush layup and a three by Allan sandwiched an Oglesby free throw to put the Hornets up 57-52.
Morgan King got the Quakers back within three points, but jumpers by Dorris and Allan put the Hornets back ahead by seven. Allan's fifth three-pointer of the game put the Hornets up 64-54 with 3:25 left to play.
Penley connected on a pair from the charity stripe with 2:29 remaining to put LC up 12, capping off a 21-3 run.
Allan finished with a game-high 25 points, giving her double-figure efforts in four-straight contests. She also led the Hornets with seven rebounds while Penley and Sammi Goldsmith had six boards a piece. Hairston finished with 11 points to go along with 10 each from Forbush and Dorris.
Oglesby ended the game with 18 points and a monstrous 17 boards with Brittany Drew and Kayla Adams had 12 and 11 points respectively for Guilford (15-5/7-4).
This is the Hornets' first win over the Quakers since the 2008-09 season.
Lynchburg (12-8/9-2) travels to Bridgewater (Va.) College (7-12/5-6) Saturday for a 2 p.m. ODAC start.
