Fawkes, Defense Powers #11 Lynchburg Past #16 Gettysburg 12-6

LYNCHBURG, VA – The #11 Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team picked up a key non-conference win at home on Saturday against #16 Gettysburg College with a decisive 12-6 victory.

The Bullets struck first and quickly, with a goal from Bijan Firouzan assisted by Martin Manilla at 11:35. Gettysburg advanced the score to 2-0 just three minutes later after Robby Maddux scored off an assist from Jameson Smith.

At 6:32, LC finally found the back of the net when Campbell Armstrong fired in a goal, and from then on it was all Lynchburg. Less than a minute later, the Hornets evened the score at 2-2 when David Alyanakian scored a goal off an assist from Aaron Murphy. LC took the lead when Thomas Rodenhouse scored at 3:39 in the first period, and kept its lead for the rest of the game.

Lynchburg dominated both the second and third periods of play, adding nine more goals to their lead. Even more impressive, the Hornet defense did not allow a Gettysburg goal in either the second or third quarter. LC held its 12-2 lead going into the fourth, but the Bullets tried to play catch-up, scoring four goals in the period.

Alyanakian, Armstrong and Todd Galvin each tallied two goals for the Hornets, while Murphy, Austin Stewart, Rob Arnold, Rodenhouse, Evan Leeder and Jacob Fuller each added one. Murphy led the team in assists with three. Chris Hower and Andrew Fawkes both picked up three ground balls.

Fawkes started his first career game in goal for the Hornets, playing 57:47 in the net and saving 12 balls. Jon Maddalone played all 60:00 at goal for Gettysburg, and picked up eight saves.

The Hornets (2-2) will be back in action on Saturday, March 15 in their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game of the year, when they will take on Guilford College at home at 1 p.m.
