Murphy Nets Six; LC Takes Down RMC 12-7
LYNCHBURG, VA – Sophomore Aaron Murphy scored six goals as the Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team defeated Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Randolph-Macon College 12-7 on Saturday night.
The Hornets honored the program's 11 seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
LC did not waste any time getting on the board in the first period when Murphy fired in an unassisted goal just 39 seconds in. The Yellow Jackets retaliated with two goals in a row to take an early 2-1 lead, with both goals coming from Jason Andrews. Randolph-Macon's lead would not last long as Murphy notched his second goal of the game at 9:08 off an assist from Cole Barrett to even the score at 2-2. Murphy's goal started a six-goal scoring run for the Hornets, giving them a 7-2 advantage at the end of the first period. Goals came from Hunter Thompson, Murphy and Austin Stewart with assists from Barrett, Todd Galvin and Thomas Rodenhouse.
The Yellow Jackets were able to find the back of the net once in the second period when Justin Butler scored at 12:04, but the Hornets answered back when Barrett received the ball from Tommy Kestermann and notched a goal at 10:57 to make the score 9-3.
Lynchburg dominated the third period, scoring all three goals of the quarter. Goals came from Dane Angell, Murphy and Galvin. Junior Andrew Fawkes held strong in goal in the third, as the LC defense allowed no goals the entire period. The Yellow Jackets tried to play catch-up in the fourth period, scoring three goals in a row from Nolan Clark, Kyle Snodderly and Andrews, but Charlie Oldendorp sealed the game with a goal at 2:21 from Armstrong to extend the lead to 12-6.
Brian Davies recorded 11 saves in goal for the Yellow Jackets (7-7/3-4 ODAC). Armstrong led the Hornets in assists with two on the night.
Lynchburg (11-4/6-1 ODAC) will look to extend its win streak to five games when the Hornets take on Bridgewater College in ODAC play on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
