Defensive Struggle Goes Way of Bridgewater, 1-0
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team found itself in a defensive struggle against Bridgewater College on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action, falling just short by a score of 1-0.
The game was evenly matched through the first half with Bridgewater getting four shots, one saved by Scott Zaring, while the Hornets took six attempts with four being turned away by Kevin Morris.
The Hornets best attempt came just before halftime when the ball was centered in the box to John Mackey. The freshman forward ripped a shot to the bottom right corner, but was turned away by a sprawling Morris.
Both teams went back and forth early in the second half before a key break went the way of the Eagles.
Fourteen minutes into the second half the ball was played back by the Lynchburg midfield. It was challenged by Eagle forward Max Chacon as it reached the back line. The Hornet defender tried to chip it away from Chacon and the keeper ran out as well. A bad bounce from the soccer ball sent it over the keeper and into the net.
Lynchburg outshot Bridgewater 20-7 and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Morris saved nine balls for Bridgewater (2-6/2-0) while Zaring finished with one stop for the Hornets.
Lynchburg (4-3/1-1) hosts No. 11 Christopher Newport University (5-1-1) for a 7 p.m. start on Wednesday.
