Mary Washington Defeats LC Women 67-48
LYNCHBURG, VA – The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 67-48 victory at Lynchburg College in non-conference play Monday night.
The Eagles opened a 12-4 lead midway through the first period, but LC cut the advantage to 16-11 after one quarter. UMW quickly made the five-point cushion a 13-point edge with a 10-2 surge to open the second period, and extended the lead to 39-23 at halftime. The Eagles held a double-figure lead the rest of the way.
Lynchburg senior forward Chaney Forbush tallied team-highs of 13 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals, while fellow senior Sammi Goldsmith posted 10 points and four assists. Sarah Coon grabbed eight rebounds, Charmaine Hairston posted seven points and Caroline Naumann contributed seven rebounds and four points. The Eagles forced LC into 22 percent (13-58) shooting from the floor and just 17 percent (3-18) from three-point distance.
Brianne Comden paced Mary Washington (1-0) with 16 points and six rebounds, and was aided by Elizabeth Dofflemyer with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals. Four starters scored more than seven points in a balanced offensive effort.
The Hornets (1-1) travel to Greensboro, NC this weekend to play in a pair of games in the Guilford College Tip-Off Tournament. LC squares off with Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ) Saturday and Denison College (OH) Sunday, both at noon.
