Hornet Women Hang on for 52-45 Win over Ferrum
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College women's basketball team opened a large first half lead and withstood a late rally from visiting Ferrum College for a 52-45 win in a non-conference contest.
LC led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter and held a 32-19 edge at halftime. Ferrum cut the lead to seven (42-35) at the end of three periods and trimmed the advantage to just five with under 30 seconds to play. The Hornets missed four-straight free throws down the stretch but Chaney Forbush sank a pair from the charity stripe with six seconds remaining to seal the game.
Three Hornets scored in double figures and five posted eight points or more in a balanced scoring effort. Forbush tallied team-highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds for LC, and Sammi Goldsmith contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Charmaine Hairston had 10 points and five rebounds and Caroline Naumann and Olivia DeFrancesco each added eight points and five rebounds.
Zarkia Mattox paced Ferrum (1-5) with 18 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, six steals and three blocked shots. Kemani Crawford tallied 15 points and eight boards and Erin March snared 11 boards. The LC defense harassed the Panthers into shooting just 11 (2-18) percent shooting from three-point range and 21 turnovers.
The Hornets (4-2) host Salem College (NC) Wednesday at 5 p.m. in more non-conference play.
