Sammi Goldsmith Sets Career Assist Record in 71-60 Win at Averett
DANVILLE, VA – Senior guard Sammi Goldsmith delivered 10 assists Monday to break the Lynchburg College women's basketball team's career record and help the Hornets score a 71-60 non-conference win at Averett University.
Goldsmith has 374 assists for her career to pass current LC head coach Abby Pyzik Smith '04 (373). She set the record with her 10th helper of the game with 5:05 remaining on a pass to Caroline Naumann to make the score 65-52. Goldsmith also tied the school mark for most assists in a game for the fourth time in the last two seasons.
The Cougars led 15-12 after one period, but LC took a slim one-point edge at halftime (31-30). The Hornets opened a five-point lead in the third quarter and went ahead by double figures early in the fourth and final period. Charmaine Hairston drilled three-pointer at the 7:13 mark to push the advantage to 61-51 and Lynchburg held at least a nine-point lead the rest of the way.
Senior Chaney Forbush finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while front-court mate Naumann also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Hairston and Olivia DeFrancesco each scored nine points and Sarah Coronel filled up the stat sheet with eight points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Goldsmith added six points and four rebounds to her record-breaking assist total.
Jessica Myers had 21 points with six rebounds and five assists for Averett (3-3). Samm Chandler posted 19 points. The Hornets enjoyed a 50-37 rebound advantage and the two teams combined for 47 turnovers.
The Hornets (7-2) are off until December 30, hosting North Carolina Wesleyan College at 7 p.m.
