#8 Hornets Men's Lax Defeat #3 Salisbury 12-7
LYNCHBURG, VA – Juniors Aaron Murphy and Austin Stewart combined for nine goals Saturday as the eighth-ranked Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team defeated #3 Salisbury University 12-7 in a battle of top 10 teams.
Lynchburg opened the game with three straight goals, two from Murphy. Each team added a late tally in the period to give LC a 4-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.
The Hornets took control of the game in the second period, outscoring the Sea Gulls 3-1 for a 7-2 edge at halftime. LC keeper Chris Hawley made 10 first half saves in his first collegiate start.
Salisbury threatened in the third period, closing to 9-6 with 15 minutes left to play. SU had several chances to get within two, but the LC defense held tough. Each team had early fourth quarter goals and Lynchburg put the game away with late goals from Stewart and Murphy.
Murphy finished with five goals and two assists to go with Stewart's four tallies, and combined to hit the post several times. Todd Galvin had two goals for LC, Ryan Kardux scored once and Dane Angell added an assist. Junior Bobby Distler won 14 of his 22 face-off opportunities. Hawley finished with 13 saves on the afternoon.
Thomas Cirillo, Chrtistian Ottenritter and Chase Berquist each scored twice for Salisbury (1-1).
The Hornets had a slight edge in shots (36-34).
Lynchburg (1-0) travels to Franklin & Marshall College Saturday for a non-conference game Saturday at 1 p.m.
