Seniors Lead Hornet Women to 65-59 win over W&L on Senior Day
LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior forwards Shannon Allan and Lauren Penley combined for 28 points, 17 rebounds and five blocked shots Saturday to lead the Lynchburg College basketball team to a 65-59 win over Washington & Lee University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game. Allan and Penley, the programs two seniors, along with manager Kayla Sutton, were honored in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day.
Allan, the program's all-time leading scorer, tied for a game-high with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. She added eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Penley netted 13 points and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds with two blocks.
Defense and rebounding were keys to victory. The Generals started out shooting 71 percent from the floor en route to a 29-22 lead at the 8:47 mark. But the Hornet defense clamped down from that point on, and W&L finished the game shooting just 39 percent (22-57). LC used a 15-7 run to close out the half ahead 37-36.
The Generals led 40-39 early in the second stanza but Lynchburg dominated the remaining time, forcing W&L into just 23 percent shooting after intermission. The Hornets enjoyed a 46-36 edge in rebounding.
Sammi Goldsmith posted 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists for LC and Chaney Forbush added six points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Olivia DeFrancesco tallied nine points andfive steals.
Jackie Clifford paced W&L (14-5/7-5) with 15 points before fouling out. Emily Perszyk and Andrea Ferrero each scored 11 points.
The Hornets (15-6/10-2) travel across town to Randolph College Tuesday for another ODAC clash at 7 p.m.
