OWINGS MILLS, MD – The #11 Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team scored five times on the power play, with Austin Stewart scoring three of them, to help defeat # 7 SUNY-Cortland 15-8.  The Saturday matinee between the two powerhouses was the first game of the Greene Turtle Classic hosted by Stevenson University.

Stewart started out his explosive afternoon on the man advantage just four minutes in.  Stewart caught a pass from Chris Cornelius and fired his first of the day home.  Two minutes later, in a similar situation, it was Cornelius' turn on the power play, with Aaron Murphy getting the assist.

Cortland got on the board soon after, but Lynchburg went back up two at the 5:47 mark in the first.  The third goal once again saw Cornelius hit Stewart with a pass on the power play, the same as the first goal.  Chris Hower found the back of the net for his second goal of the season at 4:13 to put the score at 4-1, which would last until the next period.

The Red Dragons opened the scoring just 38 seconds into the second, but LC came back quickly.  This time Stewart did the assisting, as Murphy tallied his first of the day.  SUNY-Cortland responded once again, but the Hornet attackmen came back with two quick ones.  Stewart finished his hat trick, this time receiving the feed from Murphy.  Murphy notched his second, giving Lynchburg a 7-3 lead.

While Zach Hopps scored for Cortland, Stewart finished off the half on a high note.  Working in the middle of the opposing defense, Todd Galvin made a quick pass to Stewart who finished low for his fourth.

Coming out of the intermission, the Hornets earned another power play and once again took advantage.  Sean Ahearn caught a pass up top from Cornelius and fired it high for his first goal of the season.  LC then went up 10-4 after Murphy notched his third assist, this time Colin McGuire getting in on the scoring.

SUNY-Cortland answered with two straight goals, including the third from Hopps to cut the Lynchburg lead to four with 3:13 left in the third.  But just as in the second, the Hornets scored in the final minute.  With just 45 seconds left, Stewart and Cornelius combined for the third time, with Cornelius scoring this tally.

The fourth quarter once again saw the Lynchburg attack do what they do best, score goals.  This time Galvin joined the scoring party.  The Red Dragons answered with 13 minutes left on the clock, but soon after committed a cross-checking penalty.  As had been the story all day, Cornelius assisted Stewart's man-advantage goal, giving the Hornets a 13-7 lead.

Galvin scored once again with 5:13 on the clock, with Dane Angell getting his name on the stat sheet.  SUNY-Cortland scored once more, but Galvin finished off his fourth quarter hat trick, catching the feed from Murphy with 2:11 remaining.

Showing the power of the attack, Cornelius set a new career-high with six points (two goals, four assists), while Stewart notched a game high seven points.  Galvin and Murphy added four and six respectively.  Joe Scalise came off the bench for the Red Dragons (2-3 overall) and stopped 11 shots in the loss.  Chris Hawley matched his counterpart with 11.

Lynchburg (4-2) will finish play in the Greene Turtle Classic on Sunday.  The Hornets will take on Dickinson University at 1:15 at Stevenson University.
