Emory & Henry College Rallies for 61-57 win at LC
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team had its 11-game winning streak snapped 61-57 Tuesday night by visiting Emory & Henry College 61-57 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
The Hornets led the entire game, and by as many as 19 points, until the closing minutes. Lynchburg led 16-9 after one period, 33-19 at halftime, and 49-35 with one minute remaining in the third quarter. The Wasps drilled a three-pointer to cut the advantage to 11 before the wild fourth quarter began.
Emory & Henry scored the first nine points of the fourth stanza to draw to within two at 51-49 with 6:31 on the game clock. Neither offense could get much going down the stretch, but E&H slowly gained the advantage and held a 57-53 edge with 3:31 left. LC's Chaney Forbush and Charmaine Hairston each hit a pair of free throws to tie the contest and the Wasps had the ball in the final minute. Megan Jacoby sunk an off balance shot as the shot clock ran out with 34 ticks left in the game and each team called a timeout to prepare for the ensuing key possession. The Emory & Henry defense forced a difficult shot with under 10 seconds and LC was forced to foul. Asja Jenkins made both free throws to seal the victory.
Forbush led Lynchburg with 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots, while sophomore post player Caroline Naumann had a double-double with 12 points and 11 caroms. Hairston scored 13 points and Molly Shephard contributed six points and two offensive rebounds in just three minutes off the bench.
Jacoby netted a game-high 21 for Emory & Henry (11-4/5-2 ODAC) with eight assists. Taylor Blevins posted 13 points and six rebounds and Karina Farr added eight points and six rebounds. The Wasps forced LC into shooting 0-16 from three-point range and 17 turnovers.
The Hornets (13-3/6-1 ODAC) are scheduled to travel to Washington & Lee University for another ODAC game Saturday at 2 p.m.
