Guilford Women Defeat Lynchburg 63-50
GREENSBORO, NC – The Guilford College women's basketball team scored an important 63-50 win over visiting Lynchburg College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game Wednesday night. The Quakers now sit alone in first place in the standings with a 9-1 conference record, while LC falls to 7-2.
The first period was tight throughout, until Hornet senior Chaney Forbush nailed a three pointer at the buzzer to give LC a 15-11 lead after one. The Quakers outscored Lynchburg 17-7 in the second 10-minute stanza to forge a 28-22 edge at halftime. LC shot just 25 percent from the floor in the first half (8-32).
The Hornets climbed back to only trail by one point, 42-41, early in the fourth quarter. GC led 45-43 with seven minutes left and pulled away with an 8-0 run. Guilford's defense was again the story, holding LC to just 20 percent after the break, 22.6 percent overall, and 19 turnovers.
Sophomore Caroline Naumann had 14 points and eight rebounds for LC, while Forbush tallied 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Charmaine Hairston scored a team-high 16 points and Sarah Coronel had six points and a game-best 10 rebounds. The Hornets grabbed 20 offensive rebounds to help keep them close.
Anais Weatherly scored a game-high 20 points for Guilford (15-2). Lauren Ramsey added 13 points and Kayla Scott chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Lynchburg (14-4) hosts Shenandoah University Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in another conference matchup.
