ASHLAND, VA – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team rallied to turn an 11-point second period deficit into an 82-66 victory Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play at Randolph-Macon College. Junior guard Sarah Coronel scored a career-high 20 points to go with eight rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots.
The Yellow Jackets led 34-23 with 4:38 left in the second quarter when LC took control of the game. The Hornets trimmed the deficit to 41-37 at halftime and out-scored R-MC 22-12 in the third period to enter the fourth quarter with a 59-53 lead. Randolph-Macon had one run left and used a 13-4 surge to go ahead 66-63 with 4:51 remaining. But two-straight three-point baskets by Olivia DeFrancesco gave the Hornets the lead for good and LC closed out the contest on a 19-3 surge. DeFrancesco had eight points in the run, while Coronel added six.
Coronel made 10-of-13 free throw attempts for her 20 points, which also tied the high point total for the game. DeFrancesco drilled four three-pointers to end with 14 points and Chaney Forbush collected 10 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Caroline Naumann had 10 points and nine caroms while Sammi Goldsmith added nine points and five assists. Molly Shephard scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and Charmaine Hairston posted eight.
Randolph-Macon's Katie Anderson had a huge afternoon of 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds in a losing effort. Khajae Hester tallied 18 points and Hannah Livermon scored 11.
The Hornets shot 51 percent from the floor (29-56) and 46 percent (6-13) from three-point range, compared to just 41 percent (25-61) and 19 percent (3-16) from the Yellow Jackets. Lynchburg struggled from the free-throw line, hitting just 58 percent (18-31) while R-MC (6-6/2-2 ODAC) connected on all 13 of its attempts from the charity stripe.
The Hornets (11-2/4-0) have won their last nine contests. They look to run the winning streak to double figures Wednesday in a home ODAC matchup with Randolph College at 5 p.m.
