Box Score Norfolk, Va. -- Lynchburg Volleyball will host a quarterfinal match for the ODAC Tournament as the #3 seed after defeating Virginia Wesleyan in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-23).
It has been a big turnaround for the program, going from getting in as the #8 seed last season thanks to owning the head-to-head against Bridgewater to being the #3 seed outright. Lynchburg last hosted a quarterfinal in 2014 and will look to defend their home court against the #6 seed in the tournament, which has not been set yet.
The Hornets jumped out of the gate in the first set, taking a 20-9 lead but the Marlins fought back and following a Lynchburg error the score stood at 24-20. The comeback was cut short after a Marlin attack error on the next service as Lynchburg grabbed the first set, 25-20.
Short stretches of points governed the second set as neither team gained a large lead and the score sat 23-20 in Lynchburg's favor but two untimely mistakes by the Marlins gave Lynchburg the set and a 2-0 lead.
One set away from victory, the Hornets looked destined to win the match but Virginia Welseyan would not go easily. They held the lead most of the third set but it was senior Jen Garrett who helped the Hornets pull out the victory, recording half of her kills in the final set.
Garrett led the Hornets with 16 kills and 14 digs while freshman Lauren Stanford secured eight digs, five assists and two service aces. Junior Lynn Walsh added 19 more assists to her season total, putting her at 557 on the season and freshman Disa Haugsdahl registered five blocks, that is the eighth time she has had five or more blocks in a match this season.
The ladies will await the conclusion of conference play on Saturday to see who they will face on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd in Turner Gynasium for their ODAC Tournament Quarterfinal match.
