Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg Volleyball team will make their seventh appearance in an ODAC Semifinal since 2008 after defeating Emory & Henry Wednesday evening, 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20).
The Wasps were loud and proud as they warmed up and along with the excitment of the Quarterfinal match, the visiting team came out strong in the first set recording 15 kills and only one error as they took the opening set thnaks to a .412 hitting percentage.
Flipping the script in the second set, the Hornets hit .310, smashed 12 kills and only three errors and capitalized on seven errors by the Wasps to even the match at 1-1.
After Lynchburg went on an 12-5 run, which included four kills from senior Jen Garrett, Emory & Henry was forced to call a timeout to slow the momentum and build a strategy for getting back into the set. Whatever gameplan they drew up was very effective, following the timeout the Wasps fought back to within one at 24-23 but a costly error gave the Hornets the set and the lead 2-1.
Even though the Hornets never held a large lead in the final set, you sensed they never felt the need to be worried. They were confident in their play and bounced back after a mistake. Junior Mesa Willis and freshman Sydney Frink helped power the Hornets in the final set, recording five kills and block combined.
Garrett led the Hornets attack as she moved into 3rd on the all-time kills list for Lynchburg, smashing 25, while junior Lynn Walsh notched her fifth 30+ assist night registering 32 in the victory. Willis added 11 kills and three blocks, freshman Lauren Stanford finished the night with 17 digs and freshman Disa Haugsdahl now sits at 28 total blocks in the last six games after blocking two more shots Wednesday evening.
