#5 Lynchburg MLAX Falls 9-8 in OT at #17 Cabrini

RADNOR, PA – The fifth-ranked Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team had a two goal fourth quarter lead Saturday afternoon, but #17 Cabrini College rallied for a 9-8 overtime victory in non-conference play.

The contest was tied at six entering the fourth quarter. Evan Lombardo and Austin Stewart found the back of the net to give the Hornets an 8-6 lead with just under eight minutes to play. Cabrini scored two unassisted goals to tie the game for the fifth time at the 6:18 mark, and neither team could convert in the closing minutes of regulation.

Evan Downey scored the game-winning goal 57 seconds into the overtime period.

The game was tied at 1-1 after the first quarter and the Cavaliers took a 2-1 lead early in the second period. Chris Cornelius, Stewart and Chris Camarca rattled off three straight scores for LC to give the visitors a 4-2 edge with seven minutes remaining in the half. Cabrini tied the game at five entering intermission.

Aaron Murphy found the back of the net for LC midway through the third period to give Lynchburg a 6-5 edge. Matt LoParo countered with a tally late in the third to even the game again.

Stewart led LC with two goals and an assist, while Murphy and Harrison Brennan each had a goal and an assist. Daniel Owens also scored and Colin McGuire contributed an assist. Bobby Distler won 11-of-20 face-off attempts and scooped five ground balls.

Downey had a hat trick for Cabrini (2-0), while LoParo had two goals and an assist. Goalie Tyler Morell earned the win between the pipes, making 11 saves after entering the game at halftime. Chris Hawley made 10 stops for LC. Neither team had much success with man-up situations, as Lynchburg converted 1-of-6 chances while the LC defense thwarted all six Cavalier attempts.

The Hornets (1-2) host Gettysburg University Saturday at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last season's Division III Tournament Semifinal game. The teams are tied for fifth place in this week's USILA top 20 poll.
