Sarah Coronel Breaks out with 25 Points to Lift LCWBB to 76-62 win at E&H
EMORY, VA – Junior guard Sarah Coronel scored a career-high 25 points Tuesday night as the Lynchburg College women's basketball team scored an important 76-62 victory at Emory & Henry College. The victory avenges a 61-57 loss to the Wasps in January, one of the only four defeats the Hornets have suffered on the season.
Coronel played the entire 40 minutes, sinking 11 of her 14 shots from the floor and grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Caroline Naumann scored 18 points, while Olivia DeFrancesco added 10. Chaney Forbush collected nine points, seven rebounds and four steals, and Charmaine Hairston and Sarah Coon each had six points. Sammi Goldsmith tallied five assists and six caroms.
Megan Jacoby delivered 16 points for Emory & Henry (15-6/9-4 ODAC). Karina Farr posted 14 points and Taylor Blevins contributed seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Lynchburg trailed 16-11 with two minutes left in the first period, but seized the lead with a 6-0 surge to close the stanza. The Hornets started the second quarter strong, scoring 12 of the first 14 points to go ahead 29-18 and extended the advantage to 43-28 at halftime. Coronel scored nine of her points in the decisive second period (26-12).
The Wasps cut the lead to 50-45 late in the third period but LC again closed the quarter strong with a 6-0 run to extend the lead to double figures. Lynchburg enjoyed at least a nine-point cushion the rest of the way.
Lynchburg moves up to the top spot in the conference with an 11-2 ODAC record, 18-4 overall. Guilford College can reach 11-2 as well if the Quakers defeat Hollins University Wednesday evening and hold the tiebreaker over LC. E&H sits in third, with Washington & Lee and Eastern Mennonite Universities tied for fourth with 8-5 marks.
The Hornets travel to Virginia Wesleyan College (6-7 ODAC) Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
