Lynchburg Men's Lacrosse Falls at Hampden-Sydney
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team was defeated Saturday at Hampden-Sydney College Saturday 13-9 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.
The teams each had a goal in the first period, and Lynchburg's Dane Angell and Ryan Kardux found the back of the net to give LC a 3-1 edge early in the second period. Following a Tiger goal, Austin Stewart made it a 4-2 game with an unassisted tally. H-SC pulled ahead with three-straight goals, and each team scored before intermission to put the Tigers in the lead 6-5 at the break.
Hampden-Sydney netted the first four goals of the second half, two from Jake Koferi, to assume a 10-5 lead with two minutes remaining in the third period. Aaron Murphy rattled off two-straight tallies to cut the gap and Colin McGuire followed with another goal with three seconds left in the third to make it a 10-8 game entering the final period of play.
The Tigers scored the first two goals of the fourth, but Stewart countered at the seven-minute mark to cut the lead to three. H-SC added an insurance goal late and hung on for the win.
Lynchburg out-shot its hosts 40-29, but Tiger net-minder Mitch Renfrow made 11 saves. Bobby Distler won 15 of the game's 24 face-offs and scooped six ground balls while Zach Thompson forced a pair of turnovers.
McGuire, Angell, Stewart and Murphy all had two goals for Lynchburg, and Chris Cornelius had an assist.
Chandler Shaheen and Koferi each had a hat trick for H-SC (10-5/5-2 ODAC).
The Hornets (7-7/4-2 ODAC) host Guilford College Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night. The program's 15 seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
