Murphy and Stewart Combine for 12 Goals as Men's Lax Downs Guilford 22-11 on Senior Night
LYNCHBURG, VA - It was senior night on Shellenberger Field for the Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team, and seniors
Aaron Murphy and
Austin Stewart combined for 12 goals to lead the Hornets past Guilford College 22-11 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday.
Guilford and Lynchburg went back and forth in the first quarter, with the Hornets getting scores from seniors Murphy, Chris Cornelius, Stewart, and Jacob Fuller and they led 4-2 after one.
It was the second period where Lynchburg began to break the game wide open, scoring all nine tallies. Murphy led the way with a hat trick during that run in addition to a deuce from Stewart, and one goal each from
Colin McGuire,
Danny Czerkawski,
Andrew Thomas, and
Dane Angell. LC went into intermission with a 13-2 advantage.
Senior goalie
Chris Hawley made his eighth save of the game to start the second half as Murphy and Stewart both added two more scores to put the home team up 15-2 before Guilford's Zachary Berkowitz put his team on the board for the first time since the first quarter. Lynchburg's senior attack duo repeated themselves with one more goal between the two as the Hornets entered the final quarter up 17-7.
Two goals for the Quakers on a non-releasable man-up opportunity to start the fourth quarter was answered by four-straight shots to the back of the net from Lynchburg. A few more goals from both teams resulted in the game's final score, 23-11. LC scorers from the final quarter included Murphy, Cornelius,
Evan Lombardo,
Brooks Melvin, and
Walker Rice.
In all, Murphy finished with seven goals and two assists for nine points, while Stewart finished with five. Senior
Joe Vincent led the defense with two caused turnovers. Czerkawski (9-13 FO, 7 GB) and
Bobby Distler (8-13 FO, 6 GB), also both seniors, handled the majority of the game's face-offs for Lynchburg who won 21 of 35 in that category. LC was six for seven on extra man opportunities and shot 35 of its 52 shots on goal.
Guilford (7-8/3-5 ODAC) was led by Adam Fiore's three goals and three assists. Parker Styles made 14 saves in net for the Quakers.
Lynchburg moves to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC. Up next, Randolph-Macon College comes to LC on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for the Hornet's final home game of the regular season.
