Murphy Paces Men's Lax with Seven Goals, LC Beats Randolph-Macon 16-5

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team knocked off visiting Randolph-Macon College 16-5 with the help of Aaron Murphy's seven scores in his team's final home game of the regular season in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Wednesday night.

This is the second game in a row where Murphy has totaled seven goals, matching his career-high performance from last Saturday against Guilford on Senior Night.

Randolph-Macon seemed to have the first bit of momentum, scoring the game's first goal with 11:25 to go in the first period.  But Lynchburg responded with eight unanswered goals to quickly put out any hopes of a Yellow Jacket upset.  After Chris Cornelius found the back of the net for LC at 10:41, Murphy and Ryan Kardux each scored a pair in the first quarter along with Austin Stewart's tally with one second remaining to give the Hornets a 6-2 edge after the opening 15 minutes.

Dane Angell and Evan Lombardo scored the next two before Kyle Keepers assisted Nick Benhoff for Randolph-Macon to briefly end the Hornets' run.  Murphy would score three unassisted goals to follow and put LC up 11-2 at the half.

Jacob Fuller added a score with Murphy in the third quarter to keep momentum in favor of the home team.  The Yellow Jackets' Sam Mayer ripped one from the top on a man-up opportunity to make the scoreboard read 13-3 heading into the final period of play.

When Lynchburg had an extra man opportunity early in the fourth quarter, Cornelius assisted Murphy one last time for his seventh and final goal of the night.  Three minutes later, Derek Bullock scooped up a ground ball and zipped an outlet pass to fellow senior defender Jake Woodworth who streaked downfield and ripped one past the Jackets' netminder for his first career goal.  Freshman Rivington Lambert joined in on the goal-scoring action for LC's final addition to the scoreboard as RMC would score twice more to end the game at 16-5.

Randolph-Macon (4-12/3-5 ODAC) goalkeeper Brian Davies made 13 saves on the night, stifling numerous good looks for Lynchburg throughout the game.  Miles Muncie scored twice to lead all scorers for the Yellow Jackets.

Bobby Distler was 9-10 facing off for Lynchburg, who was 19-23 overall at the X.  The Hornets also collected more ground balls (33-17) and took more shots (51-25) on the evening.

After Wednesday night's performance, senior attack Austin Stewart (246 goals) is just one goal shy of tying the all-time career goal record for the ODAC.

Lynchburg (9-7/6-2) has gained some momentum, winning each of the last two games and has one contest remaining until the post-season begins next week.  The Hornets will play next at Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
