Austin Stewart Breaks ODAC Goals Record in 17-11 Win at Va. Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Senior attack Austin Stewart broke the Old Dominion Athletic conference (ODAC) record for career goals Saturday in a 17-11 Lynchburg College victory at Virginia Wesleyan College in conference play.

Stewart netted three goals Saturday to reach 249 in his four seasons and surpass the old mark of Roanoke College's Jon Mason (247, 2004-07).

Each team found the back of the net three times in the first period, and the contest was tied at six late in the second. LC went into halftime with momentum and an 8-6 lead after back-to-back tallies from Aaron Murphy and Stewart.

The Hornets took control of the game with the first four goals of the second half, all from different scorers. LC held at least a four-goal lead from that point on.

Murphy finished the contest with five goals and three assists, recording 19 goals in his last three games, all Hornet victories. Chris Cornelius had a hat trick, Evan Lombardo had two goals and two assists and Jacob Fuller also had two goals. Colin McGuire posted a goal and a game-high four assists and Sean Ahearn also got in the scoring column with a goal.

All-time ODAC points leader Josh Currier paced Virginia Wesleyan (10-6/4-5 ODAC) with six goals and three assists. John Roth had two goals and two assists and Matt Baldwin tallied a goal and an assist. Sean Galloway made 23 saves for the Marlins.

Lynchburg won 21 of the game's 31 face-offs, with Bobby Distler going 15-for-22 and Danny Czerkawski winning 6-of-9. Distler scooped a game-high seven ground balls, and Chris Hawley made 11 saves for LC.

Lynchburg out-shot VWC 58-30 on the afternoon and the Hornets were successful on 19 of their 20 clear attempts.

The Hornets (10-7/7-2 ODAC) will enter the 2016 ODAC Championship Tournament as the #4 seed in the six-team single elimination field. LC, the two-time defending champions, will host a home game in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Complete brackets, times and matchups will be released from the conference office later this weekend.
