Lynchburg, Va. -- The Hornets easily handled Methodist, 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-22) but dropped a heart-breaker to South Region power Maryville in the last match of the Lynchburg Invitational, 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-5).
Senior Jen Garrett once again led the way for the Hornets as she compiled 37 kills on the day extending her kill total on the season to a whopping 137. The outside hitter recorded another 20+ kill match against Maryville and now holds a 4.15 kill/set average and her hitting percentage was raised to .257 after Saturday's double bill.
The hungry Hornet hitters were fed by junior Lynn Walsh who finished the day with 56 assists, including a season high 31 assists in the match against Maryville. Freshman Disa Haugsdahl had her best day of her young career as she smashed 21 kills in the two matches while Lauren Stanford (43 digs) and freshman Heaven Jarrell (6 blocks) continued to make major contributions to a Hornet team that feeds off the chemistry between its young and experienced players.
The Hornets are back in action this Wednesday night when they host the Bridgewater Eagles at 7 pm in Turner Gym. In the last meeting between the two teams, Lynchburg blanked Bridgewater on its home court, 3-0, Mesa Willis recorded 10 kills and Lynn Walsh tallied 23 assists.
The All-Tournament Team for the Lynchburg Invitational was announced as well. Here are the honorees:
