Box Score Lynchburg, Va. – The Hornets regained their early season form Friday evening as they put away Roanoke College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-19). The win moves Lynchburg to 8-3 while drops Roanoke to 8-2 and the result puts both teams at 1-1 in the conference.
The Hornets got off to a quick four-point lead after two attack errors by the Maroons and two service aces from junior Lynn Walsh, which proved to be a strong point for Lynchburg in the first set as they recorded five as a team. A balanced attack and strong presence by the middle blockers helped the Hornets win the first set, 25-20, and get out to a 1-0 set lead.
Roanoke went on a 6-0 run to start the second set but Lynchburg rattled off five straight to get within one and of those five points, four different Hornets recorded kills. After another six point run by the Maroons, Head Coach Beth Ellinger called a timeout to break up the opponent's momentum and find a way to narrow the 12-5 deficit.
The move by the experienced coach proved beneficial as Lynchburg doubled their kills and won the set, 25-19, allowing Roanoke to score only seven points the rest of the set.
Freshman Ragan Rudisill used all of her skills to help the Hornets in the third set as she turned a large portion of her 10 digs into attacking opportunities for the Hornets and recorded two aces as well. The freshman corps for the Hornets once again stepped up big as freshman Heaven Jarrell continued her blocking streak adding three more from Friday night's victory and freshman Lauren Stanford recorded 18 digs to put her at 166 on the season, which is best on the Lynchburg squad.
Senior Jen Garrett had a successful game on the offensive and defensive fronts for Lynchburg as she smashed 13 kills and tallied 12 digs in the win. Junior Lynn Walsh, who surpassed the 1,000 mark for career assists against Stevenson earlier in the season, continued to rack up the assists as she compiled 17 more against the Maroons.
Looking to string together back-to-back wins, the Hornets will host Hollins University this Saturday, Sept. 17 at 2 pm in Turner Gymnasium.
