Box Score 2 Harrisonburg, Va, -- With a career high in kills Saturday afternoon, junior Mesa Willis helped a potent Hornets offense easily defeat Catholic University 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21) and Hood College 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-13, 25-14) en route to winning the EMU Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record.
Willis recorded 17 kills in the first match of the day and was not the only busy Hornet on attack, as senior Jen Garrett also collected 17 kills only a day after recording the second most kills for a Hornet in a single game. Garrett has already accumulated 66 kills in four matches leaving her with an impressive 4.13 kills per set average on the season.
Junior Lynn Walsh and freshman Erin Farina combined for 67 assists on the day, 40 alone in the first match while freshman Lauren Stanford continues to impress in the Libero role as she showed off her defensive abilities tallying up 28 digs in the twin bill. Freshman Heaven Jarrell put a roof over the net as the middle blocker recorded nine blocks and earned 10 points for the Hornets.
Teamwork was essential in the Hornets tournament victory and it was on perfect display in the second match against Hood College as Head Coach Beth Ellinger had 17 players record a stat, with 13 of those earning at least one point each for the Hornets. The Lynchburg Volleyball team smashed their opponents this weekend finishing the tournament with 190 kills.
Senior Jen Garrett was honored as the Lynchburg selection for All-Tournament team and it was well deserved as the senior collected 66 kills, which was a third of the team's total kills and gathered 71 points, twice as many as the next teammate on Lynchburg's roster.
The Hornets look to continue their winning ways as they host Ferrum College in Turner Gymnasium on Monday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 pm.
