Volleyball Stays Unbeaten as the Hornets Tame the Panthers, 3-0

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. – After beginning the 2016 campaign with four straight victories and tournament victory, the Hornets Volleyball continued their winning ways as the Hornes dropped the Ferrum Panthers in straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-18).

The first set was a back and forth affair as the largest lead for either team was three points. Neither team had a real advantage in attacking as Ferrum ended the first set with 33 attacks and 12 kills and Lynchburg recorded 32 attacks with 14 kills. Senior Jen Garrett picked up off where she left off over the weekend, recording five kills in the opening set.

Ferrum jumped out to quick lead at 10-5 as the Hornets made errors on attack and in the service. Lynchburg then went on a 14-5 run with the help of Ferrum errors and kills from Garrett and freshmen Disa Haugsdahl and Sydney Frink. Junior Lynn Walsh added six assists for the Hornets and closed out the second set with a service ace.

The third set was riddled with errors as the Panthers first seven points were off Hornet errors. The crowd was quiet for most of the third set but Turner Gym erupted in celebration as a back and forth rally ended with a beautiful kill by freshman Heaven Jarrell. Ferrum stayed alive as they went on a 4-1 run to get within six points but Garrett closed the door and finished off the Panthers with an emphatic kill to end the match.

Garrett recorded yet another game with double digit kills, finishing with 14 while also adding eight digs and two service aces. Walsh turned in another great performance in the middle as she assisted on 22 kills and recorded two service aces as well. Haugsdahl was second in kills for the Hornets with seven and stuffed two Panther attacks on Monday night.

The Hornets take their 5-0 record into another tournament this weekend when they host the 2016 Lynchburg Invitational on Friday Sept. 9 and Saturday Sept. 10. The six team tournament includes Maryville, Methodist, Oglethorpe, Randolph, and Stevenson.
