Naumann scores 30 as women's basketball tops VWU

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Caroline Naumann (Mechanicsville, Va.) scored 15 of her 30 points from the free throw line as Lynchburg College's women's basketball team took a 64-54 decision over visiting Virginia Wesleyan in both teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener Thursday night.

Both Naumann's 15 made free throws and 17 attempts at the line matched Lynchburg single-game program records.

Naumann's career-high in scoring paired with 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, while Brittany Afolabi-Brown (Montgomery Village, Md.) added a double-double of her own with 15 points and 10 boards. Senior point guard Olivia DeFrancesco (Greensboro, N.C.) dished out 10 assists to go with her five points.

Lynchburg's defense held Virginia Wesleyan's leading scorer, Jayla Harris, to just four points in a strong effort on the other side of the floor.

The victory was the Hornets fifth-straight over VWU.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 64, Virginia Wesleyan 54

Records: Lynchburg (5-1, 1-0 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan (2-4, 0-1 ODAC)

Venue: Turner Gymnasium, Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Lynchburg jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the early going and led 17-9 after the first period. Naumann scored eight points in the second period to run her halftime total to 15 points, and LC led by seven at the break.

- Virginia Wesleyan kept the deficit in single digits for most of the third period, but Lynchburg went on a 7-0 run, sparked by Alex Allen's (China Grove, N.C.) offensive rebound and putback, to put the game out of reach.

- Naumann's 30-point outburst is the first to pass that threshold for LC this season. The most recent Hornets player to reach that milestone was Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.), who scored 31 in a win over Randolph-Macon on Jan. 21.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets take a break from their ODAC schedule with a trip to Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday to play William Peace. LC tips off against the Pacers at 6 p.m.
