Royals topple women's basketball in ODAC battle

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Lynchburg College's women's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit Wednesday night against Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Eastern Mennonite, but the Hornets couldn't hang on, falling 64-59 for the first time in conference play this season.

Senior forward Caroline Naumann (Mechanicsville, Va.) had her third-straight double-double -- 15 points and 14 rebounds -- to lead LC statistically. Junior wing Alex Allen (China Grove, N.C.) chipped in 14 points and seven boards, and junior forward Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.) added 10 points and seven rebounds.

EMU's Chrissy Delawder led all scorers with 18 points.

The defeat brought an end to Lynchburg's 17-game home winning streak, which dated back to Jan. 19, 2016.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Eastern Mennonite 64, Lynchburg 59

Records: Eastern Mennonite (5-3, 2-0 ODAC), Lynchburg (6-2, 1-1 ODAC)

Venue: Turner Gymnasium, Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Lynchburg began the contest cold from the field, shooting just 20 percent (2-for-10) from the floor in the first period. The Royals led 19-9 after 10 minutes.

- EMU lengthened the deficit in the second period to lead by a dozen at halftime despite Naumann's 10-point quarter.

- Lynchburg did close the gap in the third. The Hornets ripped off a 15-1 run to end the period with a 42-41 advantage.

- Delawder opened the fourth with a go-ahead 3-pointer, however, and EMU never trailed again. Lynchburg point guard Olivia DeFrancesco (Greensboro, N.C.) cut the lead to one point, 60-59, with a 3-pointer of her own with four seconds to play, but Delawder sank four free throws in the waning seconds to seal the win.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will take a break from conference play when North Carolina Wesleyan comes to town Sunday. The Battling Bishops and Hornets will tip off at 2 p.m.
