Men's basketball defeats Eagles in Wayne Proffitt Classic

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team claimed a narrow 69-64 victory over the University of Mary Washington Saturday night in Game 2 of the inaugural Wayne Proffitt Classic. The Hornets move to 6-0 for the first time since 2014-15.

Senior wing Austin Wrighten (Woodbridge, Va.) and senior forward Connor Schroeder (Blacksburg, Va.) each scored 18 points, combining for more than half of Lynchburg's total output. Wrighten also racked up 10 rebounds and four assists.

Senior guard Devante' Young (Charlotte, N.C.) had a solid game with nine points, three assists, and three steals. Sophomore forward Reggie Davis (Greensboro, N.C.) pitched in 10 points.

Lynchburg athletics honored former head men's basketball coach and 1967 alumnus Wayne Proffitt at halftime of the game, presenting the lifelong Lynchburger with a framed No. 23 jersey, which the Hornets retired years earlier.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 69, Mary Washington 64

Records: Lynchburg 6-0, Mary Washington 3-2

Venue: Wayne Proffitt Court at Turner Gymnasium, University of Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mary Washington leapt out to a 19-10 lead, but Davis' spark off the bench helped lead the Hornets back. The sophomore scored eight points in his first 7 minutes, a 3-pointer with 10:29 to go giving Lynchburg its first lead of the night, 21-19, and capping an 11-0 run.

  • The score stayed tied at 21-21 before a layup by Wrighten followed by a 3-pointer by Schroeder pushed the Hornets ahead. Lynchburg kept the momentum going and ended the half ahead, 45-35.

  • After a slow start to the second half for both teams, Mary Washington closed the deficit to one on a 3-pointer by Mike Janowski with 4:41 remaining. After Young responded with a 3 of his own, the Eagles took the lead, 64-63, with 3:07 to play on a corner trey by Mark Madison.

  • A short time later, Wrighten stole the ball and went coast-to-coast before being fouled in the act of shooting. The senior knocked down both free throws to put the Hornets ahead by one. Schroeder's layup and a pair of clutch free throws from senior guard Jesse Case (Leesburg, Va.) preserved the victory.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Wayne Proffitt Classic will conclude Sunday, Dec. 2 with another pair of games in Turner Gymnasium. Randolph and Mary Washington start the action at 1 p.m., followed by Lynchburg and Christopher Newport at 3 p.m.
