Men's basketball upsets Emory & Henry on Alumni Day

Lynchburg, Va. –  Junior guard Austin Wrighten (Woodbridge, Va.) made a pair of clutch free throws to seal the game after being fouled in an attempt to go up for a dunk with 0.4 seconds left, and the Lynchburg College men's basketball team was able to celebrate Saturday's dedication of Wayne Proffitt Court with an 81-79 victory over the Old Dominion Athletic Conference-leading Emory & Henry Wasps.

Junior forward Connor Schroeder (Blacksburg, Va.) led the game in scoring with 20 points while adding two blocks on the defensive side. Senior forward Logan Seacrist (Fredericksburg, Va.) followed up Schroeder's effort by contributing 15 points in only 18 minutes of game action. Senior forward, Chase Branscomb (Bristol, Tn.) led the Wasps in scoring by adding 18 points to go along with three assists and four rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emory & Henry jumped out to the early advantage with 12:44 left in the first half by going on a 13-3 run.

  • The Hornets made four consecutive baskets in the beginning of the second half, including three 3-pointer to help them gain a 48-42 edge.

  • The Wasps regained the lead by going on an 11-2 run towards the final minutes of the game. Emory & Henry carried a 79-71 lead into the last 1:26.

  • Seacrist nailed two straight 3-pointers within a span of 40 seconds to cut the lead to two points with 43 seconds remaining.

  • With the score deadlocked at 79-79 the Hornets junior point guard Devante' Young (Charlotte, N.C) stole the ball from Emory & Henry's Daniel Spencer, and Young proceeded to whip an outlet pass to a streaking Wrighten. Wrighten was fouled as he flew up for a game-winning dunk with 0.4 seconds left and was awarded two free throws. He knocked them both down to clinch the win for the Hornets.   

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will stay in Lynchburg to take on Roanoke Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. The contest will be a CODE RED game.
