Men's lacrosse uses big second half to defeat Stevenson

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team earned an impressive 13-6 victory over visiting Stevenson Friday night on Shellenberger Field.

Junior attackman Evan Lombardo (Franklin Park, N.J.) lead the team with five goals, his fourth game of the season with five or more goals. Lombardo currently sits second in the ODAC with 35 goals this season. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Rogers (Leesburg, Va.) added three goals, two ground balls, and one assist  for the Hornets. Senior attackman Colin McGuire (Odenton, Md.) and sophomore attackman Trammel Robinson (Memphis, Tenn.) each had an overall good showing; McGuire collected two goals and two assists, while Robinson also scored two goals, one assist, and picked up five ground balls.

Senior goalie CJ Santora (Tewksbury, Mass.) was on his 'A' game, saving 13 of the Mustangs' 19 shots on goal.

Final: Lynchburg 13, Stevenson 6

Records: Lynchburg 5-6, Stevenson 4-6

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams started off strong in the first quarter. Rogers got the game going with the first goal for the Hornets assisted by freshman attackman A.J. Nieves (Centreville, Va.). Lynchburg created a 3-1 lead with only five minutes left in the quarter, but Stevenson closed that gap and tied the game, 4-4. Mustang midfielder Gray McKee scored in the last second to end the quarter 5-4 in favor of Stevenson.

  • Not much changed in the second quarter as each team only added one more goal, going into halftime with the Mustangs ahead, 6-5.   

  • Lynchburg took control of the game during the third quarter, scoring four more goals. The Hornets locked down the win in the fourth by adding another four goals. Lynchburg's defense and its goalie, Santora, posted a second-half shutout.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will be back on Shellenberger Field Saturday night at 7 pm to face the Quakers of Guilford College. The two teams will celebrate the HEADstrong Foundation during the game.
