Men's lacrosse defeats W&L, advances to ODAC final

Lexington, Va. -- The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team blazed forward into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship after an 11-8 come-from-behind victory against top-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinal round Friday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Colin McGuire (Odenton, Md.) and sophomore attackman Trammel Robinson (Memphis, Tenn.) stepped up, scoring three goals each on the field. It was McGuire's third-straight game with at least a hat trick.

Junior attackman Logan Adams (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) assisted on five goals in the last two quarters. Senior goalie CJ Santora (Tewksbury, Mass.) played admirably in the net, collecting 19 saves against the Generals, who are ranked No. 12 nationally.

Final: Lynchburg 11, No. 12 Washington and Lee 8

Records: Lynchburg 11-8, Washington and Lee 14-4

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter was an impressive show of defense, as each team only scored one goal. The Hornets got their first goal from Kevin Rogers (Leesburg, Va.) assisted by Evan Lombardo (Franklin Park, N.J.).

  • Washington and Lee gained the lead in the second quarter with three consecutive goals. McGuire scored Lynchburg's second goal with eight seconds left before the half to bring the score to 4-2 in favor of the Generals at halftime.

  • Robinson and Lombardo each scored a goal assisted by Adams in the third quarter, but Washington and Lee retained a 6-5 lead with 15 minutes to play.

  • After W&L began the fourth period with a quick goal, McGuire and Rogers each scored to tie the game, 7-7. After another Generals score, Lombardo scored a game-tying goal for the Hornets, assisted by Adams, with 8:32 to play. Robinson secured Lynchburg's win with back-to-back goals, followed by a goal from McGuire, as LC ended the game on a 4-0 run.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will face the winner of third-seeded Roanoke and No. 2 seed Hampden-Sydney for the ODAC championship Saturday, May 5 at Washington and Lee. The Hornets are in search of their seventh conference title and the program's first since 2015. Face-off is set for 7 p.m.
