Box Score Emory, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team gave 21st-ranked Emory & Henry a run on the road but eventually fell, 63-59, in a hard-fought Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest Saturday.
Senior forward Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.) scored a team-high 19 points to go with six rebounds for Lynchburg, while freshman guard Lizzie Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) reached double digits in the scoring column for the eighth time this season, tallying 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Senior forward Alex Allen (China Grove, N.C.) and freshman center Kate Kolb (Morris Plains, N.J.) each scored eight points off the bench for the Hornets.
Sydney McKinney led the Wasps with a 21-point, 10-rebound effort, while Tessa Johnston scored 18 points for E&H.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Johnston nailed a 3-pointer on the opening possession, and the Wasps held a narrow lead throughout the first period. Freshman guard Emily Elliott (High Point, N.C.) made a layup with 7 seconds left in the quarter to cut the hosts' lead to 16-14 after 10 minutes of play.

Freshman forward Erin Green (Poolesville, Md.) gave Lynchburg its first lead with 6:33 until halftime, part of an 8-1 Hornets run, and Elliott made it a 29-22 Lynchburg advantage with 2:26 'til the break.

E&H finished the half with seven unanswered points to knot the score at 29 midway through.

The Wasps started the third period with a 9-0 run, totaling 16 unanswered points around intermission, to take control of the game, but Lynchburg fought back with three straight baskets to cut the lead to one possession with 3:30 left in the third.

Davis' layup with 19 seconds left in the period gave Lynchburg a 41-40 lead, but the Wasps' Josie Salyer countered with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. Lynchburg trailed 43-42 with 10 minutes to go.

Lynchburg hung around in the fourth, and Shephard tied the game, 53-53, with 3:46 remaining. McKinney countered with back-to-back baskets for E&H, and the Wasps led the rest of the way.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Hornets return home to Wayne Proffitt Court on Wednesday, Jan. 16 to play host to ODAC-leading Guilford. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
