Women's basketball wins third straight, topping Randolph

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team made it three in a row Wednesday night with a 66-55 road Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over crosstown rival Randolph.

The victory seals a season-series sweep for the Hornets, which got a game-best 21 points out of sophomore guard Maggie Quarles (Roanoke, Va.). Quarles went 7-for-15 from 3-point territory, the second time this season she's made at least seven 3s in a game and just the third time in program history that a Hornet has accomplished the feat.

Freshman guard Lizzie Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds for her first-career double-double, while freshman forward Erin Green (Poolesville, Md.) added 12 points and eight boards.

Senior wing Alex Allen (China Grove, N.C.) picked up 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists off the bench.

Kalyn Banks led the WildCats with 18 points.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 66, Randolph 55

Records: Lynchburg (10-9, 8-4 ODAC), Randolph (4-13, 2-8 ODAC)

Venue: RAD Center, Randolph College, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team could pull away early as Lynchburg finished the first period on a 6-0 run to lead 12-10 after 10 minutes of play.

  • The WildCats began the second on an 8-0 run of their own, but Quarles got hot from long range after that. The sophomore canned four treys in the period, the last with 8 seconds remaining, to send Lynchburg into halftime with a 34-24 lead on the heels of a 12-0 run.

  • Allen's layup 1:31 remaining in the third pushed the Lynchburg lead to 52-39, the largest it would get.

  • Randolph cut the lead to 58-53 with 5:05 to go, but a couple defensive stops and Davis' 3-pointer gave Lynchburg some breathing room. The Hornets made five of six free throw attempts in the final minute.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will look to extend its home win streak to five games Saturday, Jan. 26 with a 2 p.m. ODAC contest against rival Roanoke. The Hornets will celebrate Alumni Day during the game.
