Harrisonburg, Va. -- Bitten by poor shooting from the field, University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team fell, 53-42, at Eastern Mennonite Saturday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference clash.

The Hornets shot just 12-for-56 (21.4 percent) in the game.

Sophomore guard Maggie Quarles (Roanoke, Va.) was the only Hornet to break into double figures, as she scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Senior forward Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.) tallied nine points and six boards.

Jess Washington led the way for the Royals with 12 points and eight rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Lynchburg led the game 11-2 after a slow-paced first period as Quarles scored seven points in the frame.

• The Hornets led by as many as 11 points early in the second before Eastern Mennonite's offense woke up. An 11-3 Royals run brought the deficit to one with 2:32 left in the first half.

• Washington's layup with 1:05 to the break gave EMU a 23-22 advantage, and the Royals went into the break ahead 25-22 after another Washington bucket.

• The Hornets mustered just six second-half field goals as the hosts pulled away for the win.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg continues its run through the ODAC schedule Monday evening at 7, when the Hornets will play host to Washington and Lee. Lynchburg took the first meeting between the rivals, 68-60, Nov. 27 in Lexington.
