Suggs scores 50 as men's basketball wins home opener

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Tharon Suggs dumped in a career-best 50 points to lead University of Lynchburg's men's basketball team to a come-from-behind win over Pfeiffer, 91-80, Saturday evening in Game 2 of the 2019 Wayne Proffitt Classic.

Suggs, the junior transfer, went 16-for-30 from the field and 13-for-14 from the free throw line to tally the big number, becoming just the second player in program history to reach the 50-point threshold; the other was this weekend's tournament namesake -- Lynchburg all-time leading scorer and 1967 graduate Wayne Proffitt, who accomplished the feat six times in his career.

Suggs also added seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals Saturday night, helping the Hornets (3-1) overcome a nine-point halftime deficit.

Luke Romeo added all 12 of his points off the bench in the second half to aid the Lynchburg comeback, while T.C. Thacker chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Dow Dunton grabbed 15 rebounds off the bench, a huge part of the Hornets' 61-37 advantage on the glass.

Despite the big numbers, Pfeiffer (0-2) stormed out to a 20-8 lead and led 44-35 at the game's midway point.

Lynchburg began the second half with a 10-0 run, capped by Suggs' jumper with 17:11 remaining to give the Hornets their first lead since early in the first half.

Pfeiffer quickly retook the lead, but Thacker made layups on Lynchburg's next two possessions.

The Hornets leaned on strong free throw shooting (23-for-26 in the game) to hang onto the advantage.

Lynchburg now has a nine-game win streak in home-openers, dating back to the 2011 season.

The Hornets will finish off the Wayne Proffitt Classic Sunday afternoon at 3 against Methodist, which defeated Hampden-Sydney, 74-69, in Saturday's tournament opener. H-SC will square off with Pfeiffer at 1 p.m.
