Box Score Newport News, Va. -- Juniors Tharon Suggs and Reggie Davis each reached the 20-point threshold against No. 9 Christopher Newport Saturday night, but it was not enough to get University of Lynchburg's men's basketball team past the Captains, as the visitors lost, 79-77.
The Hornets (4-3) quickly took a nine-point lead -- their largest lead of the night -- at the 12:21 mark in the first half after sophomore Dow Dunton made a layup to put the Hornets up 19-10.
Lynchburg led for most of the period but after a turnover with 2:59 left, the Captains (5-1) went ahead, 34-33. Before the break, Suggs stole the ball off a bad pass and made a fast-break layup to end the half, putting the Hornets up, 38-36.
After intermission, the Hornets and Captains matched each other shot-for-shot. The largest lead for either team was only five points as CNU went up 68-63 after Cutch Ellis made a layup with 4:40 left in regulation.
The Hornets were only down by two after Davis hit a deep 3-pointer, putting the score at 72-70 CNU with 2:11 left. After a missed CNU free throw that kept the Hornet deficit at two, Suggs hit back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 77-77 with 19 seconds left.
After a missed CNU 3-pointer with 13 seconds left, the offensive rebound was tipped in and the Captains came away with the 79-77 win.
Three starters scored in double digits for Lynchburg as Suggs led all scorers on the night with 23 and Davis added 20. Fellow junior T.C. Thacker scored 17 points and had seven rebounds.
The Lynchburg men's basketball team will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 1 as the Hornets stay on the road and travel to Bridgewater to take on the Eagles with tipoff slated for 2 p.m.
