Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Michael Lyons assisted Abibi Osman's go-ahead goal and later scored one of his own to lead University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.
Fourth-seeded Lynchburg (9-4-5) got on the board in the 13th minute when Osman tracked down Lyons' saved shot just inside the 5-yard line and finished into the open goal.
The Hornets pressured for the remainder of the first half, taking 12 shots to R-MC's six, but weren't able to find the back of the net again.
No. 5-seeded Randolph-Macon (9-8) was the aggressor early in the second half, but good defense by the Hornets withstood the flurry, and Lynchburg took control of the match again late. The Hornets broke through again in the 83rd minute, when freshman Luke Mega drove the ball down the right sideline and crossed it into the box, where the R-MC goalkeeper was unable to corral it. Lyons chased the ball down and finished just in front of the net.
The Hornets also got spectacular play from junior goalkeeper Kyle Gallagher, who made five saves in his seventh clean sheet of the season to help the Hornets into the ODAC semifinals for the fourth straight season.
Lynchburg will put its five-match win streak on the line Friday, Nov. 8 at top-seeded Hampden-Sydney at 4 p.m. The two teams drew their regular-season matchup, 3-3, at H-SC on October 12.
The second semifinal between Roanoke and Washington and Lee will follow Lynchburg's semifinal, and the championship match will be at a to-be-determined time Saturday, Nov. 9. The latest information on the ODAC men's soccer tournament can be found at www.odaconline.com.
