Generals top women's basketball in ODAC quarterfinals

Box Score

Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team saw its season come to an end Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament with a 79-77 loss to third-seeded Washington and Lee at the Salem Civic Center.

Neither team led by more than seven points in the contest.

Sixth-seeded Lynchburg took the lead with 8:09 left in the third quarter and held the advantage for much of the late going until W&L's Andy Smithey scored with 30 seconds remaining to put the Generals ahead, 73-72.

Sophomore guard Carolyn Noe (Fairfax, Va.) scored a career-high 17 points, going 5-for-10 from 3-point range. She led five Hornets in double figures.

Freshman forward Erin Green (Poolesville, Md.) notched her third double-double of the season with a 15-point, 13-rebound effort. Green also blocked seven shots, one shy of the single-game program record she tied earlier this season.

Senior forward Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.) scored 19 points to go with six rebounds, freshman guard Lizzie Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) added 16 points and six assists, and senior wing Alex Allen (China Grove, N.C.) chipped in 10 points.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the early going with W&L leading for most of the first quarter. The Generals held a 19-16 advantage after 10 minutes of play.

The Generals extended the advantage to seven following Megan Horn's 3 with 6:11 left in the half, but Lynchburg scored nine of the next 12 points to cut the Generals' lead to 34-33 with 1:22 until intermission.

Washington and Lee finished the half on an 8-2 run to lead 42-35 at halftime.

Lynchburg seized momentum early in the second half with an 8-0 run, culminating with a pair of Shephard free throws that gave the Hornets a 43-42 lead.

The Hornets led by as many as five in the second half but were never able to pull away.

The final two minutes featured a tie and three lead changes. Smithey put W&L ahead, 73-72, with a pair of free throws just under the two-minute mark, but Shephard responded with a basket with 50 seconds to play to give Lynchburg a one-point advantage.

Smithey scored again on the following Generals possession, and W&L added points on free throws in the waning minutes.

Noe's 3 at the buzzer brought the score to its final standing.

The loss ends Lynchburg's nine-game win streak over Washington and Lee dating back to 2014.

Lynchburg ends the season with a 13-13 record and an 11-7 mark in ODAC play.
