Men's lacrosse defeats Va. Wesleyan in 40th anniversary game

Lynchburg, Va.-- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team celebrated the program's 40th anniversary with a 23-4 win over the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets set a new program single-game record with 80 shots as a team.

Junior midfielder Kevin Rogers (Leesburg, Va.) led the team with three goals, two assists and a ground ball. Junior attackman Colin Dean (Havre de Grace, Md.) had a good showing with two goals and two assists.

Junior attackman Trammel Robinson (Memphis, Tenn.) earned two goals and picked up four ground balls, and senior midfielder Craig Koester (Wildwood, Mo.) went 10-for-13 at the face-off and picked up a team-high eight ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Virginia Wesleyan got on the board first early in the first quarter after a shaky start from Lynchburg, but the Hornets found their footing later in the quarter. Dean got Lynchburg's scoring started, and junior defender Tyler Gallagher (Palmyra, Pa.) pushed the Hornets into a 2-1 lead with an unassisted goal, the first of his career.

  • The second quarter was all Lynchburg as the Hornets earned six more goals. Senior attackman Evan Lombardo (Franklin Park, N.J.), freshman midfielder Nate Shafer (Easton, Md.), and freshman attackman Kyle Lewis (Suwanee, Ga.) all scored in the span of 1 minute. Lynchburg out-shot the Marlins 25-2 in the quarter.

  • Senior midfielder Nick Willertz (Severn, Md.) scored back-to-back goals in the third as Lynchburg moved to a 16-2 lead.

  • Freshman Tyler Kuni (Mullica Hill, N.J.) scored his first-career goal in the fourth to bring the Hornets up 19-4. Sophomore attackman Owen Thoreck (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) also scored back-to-back goals to help polish off the rout.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will travel to Ashland, Va., to face the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in another ODAC clash.
