Men's lacrosse defeats Ferrum in first-ever meeting

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team gained another Old Dominion Athletic Conference win Tuesday night with a 22-4 defeat of the Ferrum Panthers. Lynchburg had 16 players contribute goals to the win -- the Hornets' third straight victory. It was the two programs' first-ever meeting.

Junior midfielder Brooks Poli (Downingtown, Pa.) earned two goals and one assist to lead the way. Junior attackman Colin Dean (Havre de Grace, Md.), sophomore midfielder Andrew Carpenter (Salem, N.J.), sophomore midfielder Riley Schmidt (Catonsville, Md.), senior attackman Evan Lombardo (Franklin Park, NJ) and senior attackman Andrew Thomas (Roswell, Ga.) all scored two goals as well.

Sophomore goalie Noah Bedwell (Roanoke, Va.) racked up a career-high four saves in a reserve role.

Lynchburg picked up 48 ground balls and won 20 of 28 faceoffs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dean scored an unassisted goal, quickly followed by Lombardo's first to help the Hornets start hot. Senior midfielder Nick Willertz (Severn, Md.) ended the quarter with an unassisted goal bring the Hornets up to 5-1.

  • Lynchburg scored 10 more times in the second quarter, only giving up one goal to Ferrum in a man-down situation. Thomas and Poli each scored twice in the period.

  • Carpenter tallied both his goals after halftime, and freshman midfielder Chris Jennings (Tampa, Fla.) wrapped up the game with a goal in the final minute.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will face their rivals, the Roanoke Maroons, Friday, April 5 as the defending conference champions continue ODAC play. Face-off is set for 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
